MARKETPLACE ROUNDUP

     American marketers' "new war for women's wallets" is
examined in the current U.S. NEWS.  The article, which features
campaigns from different sectors of industry, features Nike and
Reebok's battle in the sports apparel industry for the female
dollar.  U.S. NEWS cites Nike's Air Swoopes shoe and both
companies' efforts to "focus more heavily" on women endorsers
(U.S. NEWS, 11/6 issue)....Fox is promoting its Tyson-Mathis
brawl with a multimedia ad campaign featuring print ads debuting
this week, along with broadcast promos.  The tagline: "Someone's
gonna pay (but not you)," capitalizing on the fight's appearance
on free TV (ADVERTISING AGE, 10/30)....Arizona State, Wake
Forest, Virginia Tech and Fordham have signed with Dorna USA to
obtain AdTime rotational signage for their college basketball
games (Dorna USA)....Nike and Foot Locker will collect worn-out
Nike shoes in New York, Chicago and L.A. Foot Locker stores to be
ground up and recycled to resurface a basketball court at a local
Boys and Girls Club in those cities (Nike/Foot
Locker)....Starter's "Emmitt Zone" line of clothing hits stores
tomorrow.  The line will feature everything from hats and jackets
to T-shirts and turtlenecks -- all bearing a logo which features
a silhouette of Smith in action (Starter)...."Alexi Lalas Red Hot
Soccer," a new video game from Ubi Soft Entertainment, hits the
stores this week.  The game is the first electronic soccer game
named after a U.S. athlete (Sportsnet)....SportsTicker will
sponsor the CBA's Player of the Week award this season
(SportsTicker)....The Golf Channel has secured a multi-year co-
marketing agreement with W.L. Gore & Associates to make Gore-Tex
and WindStopper apparel the network's official outerwear (The
Golf Channel)....A national survey by the American Sports Data
ranks basketball as America's favorite team sport, with 47.3
million participants in '94.  Second most popular was volleyball,
with 32.5 million, followed by softball, with 30.8 million
(SGMA).....The Anheuser-Busch Golf Classic will become the
Michelob Championship at Kingsmill next year.  The tournament,
played at Kingsmill Golf Club in Williamsburg, VA, has been
sponsored by A-B for the last 20 years (Michelob)....In
Vancouver, Nike Canada is being sued by a former employee who was
left a quadriplegic after an auto accident in '91.  Michael
Jacobsen, who was working at a Nike warehouse at the time, claims
the company supplied him with beer as an incentive to work
overtime, causing him to fall asleep at the wheel and resulting
in his accident (VANCOUVER SUN, 10/31).
