POLL IN SAN JOSE FINDS LUKEWARM SUPPORT TO FINANCE WARRIORS

A survey of 500 San Jose residents found just 33% in support
of a proposal by the city to lure the Warriors from Oakland. The
poll was conducted by the SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS. Nearly 51%
oppose Mayor Susan Hammer's plan to spend $43.5M in city money to
bring the team to San Jose. But the poll "offers a bit of
encouragement to Hammer and her allies," as some said they would
favor a publicly financed Warriors move if they "knew for sure"
the team would bring "substantial economic benefits and national
recognition to San Jose." Under that scenario, the results
improved to a dead heat. Other poll highlights: Women are much
less inclined to approve the plan; virtually all opponents to the
plan cited more "important priorities than spending money on a
basketball team"; of those who support the plan, "economics and
civic pride" are key considerations; nearly 3/4 surveyed think
the $147M in the sports arena was a good investment (Mary Ann
Ostrom, SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS, 10/29).
