LOW ATTENDANCE FORCES PHILLIES TO RAISE PRICES FOR '96

Faced with an average attendance of 28,883, down more than
10,000 per game from '94, the Phillies announced that they will
raise some ticket prices for the '96 season, according to this
morning's PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER. Box seats will go from $14 to
$16, while some reserved seats will go from $9 to $10. Phillies
President Bill Giles: "We really wanted to do it last year
because the feeling of the team was much better than this winter.
But then the strike hit, so we didn't dare do it then." The
Phillies' average ticket price was $11.48, lower than 20 of 28
MLB teams, according to Giles. The '96 average will be $12.80.
Giles said the team lost "a lot of money" in '94 and '95, but
wouldn't say how much. Giles: "When I do, people don't believe
me" (Sam Carchidi, PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER, 10/20).
