PUMP DOWN THE JAM? NBA HEARS COMPLAINTS ON OVERBEARING PA'S

In response to concerns from coaches and players, the NBA
has created new rules about how loud non-crowd sounds can be in
arenas this season. Among the new guidelines on lower volume on
public-address systems: 1) The level from sound systems is not
to exceed 85 decibels. 2) During games, music or other sound
effects should only be played when the home team has the ball.
3) Recorded chants may be played when either team has the ball,
but should be played equally for both teams. 4) Sound effects
are permitted after missed or made free throws, but must cease as
soon as the shooter touches the ball again (AP/MILWAUKEE JOURNAL
SENTINEL, 10/18). ESPN's Dan Patrick: "Have you ever been to an
NBA game and suddenly a rock concert breaks out?" Patrick noted
that while the NBA has set an 85 decibel limit this season, last
season some arena PA systems would reach 100 decibels. Patrick:
"That's the same level for a jet taking off" ("SportsCenter,"
ESPN, 10/17).
