BEARS MANEUVER FOR BETTER NEGOTIATING STANCE

Bears officials said yesterday that the City of Chicago and
Mayor Richard Daley "would have to help resolve" where the team
would play for two seasons if the city agreed that Soldier Field
should be demolished and rebuilt on the same site, according to
today's CHICAGO TRIBUNE. Mike Kiley reports Bears officials
"remain skeptical" that the proposal, expected from Daley within
the next two weeks, "will be as extensive as they want." And so
they will continue to "maneuver in public for a better
negotiating stance" (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 10/16). The TRIBUNE also
reports Daley is expected to give the Bears a cut of parking and
concessions revenues (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 10/15). In the latest
issue of CRAIN'S CHICAGO BUSINESS, Borden & Strahler write,
"There's little rapport and even less understanding between Mayor
Daley and Bears President Michael McCaskey -- a fact fueling
suspicions that the two can't cut a deal on a new football
stadium because they can't stand each other" (CRAIN'S CHICAGO
BUSINESS, 10/16 issue).
