GRAF'S TAX PROBLEMS MOUNT AS REPORTS OF ARREST SURFACE

STEFFI GRAF faces possible arrest for tax evasion, according
to reports from the German magazine DER SPIEGEL. In addition,
FOCUS magazine in Germany reports that Graf's main sponsor,
German automaker Opel, might cut its sponsorship with Graf. An
Opel spokesperson denied that report (Mult., 10/9). In L.A.,
Mary Williams Walsh writes that not only are Graf and her father,
Peter, on the front pages, but "so too are the normally invisible
denizens" of the German bureaucracy, the German Tennis
Federation, and Adidas and Opel (L.A. TIMES, 10/9). FOCUS also
reports HANS-WILHELM GAEB, an Opel advisory board member, claims
Advantage Int'l and its leader PHILIP DE PICCIOTTO may have made
"questionable transfers of millions of dollars in sponsor
payments" to Graf. The charges could force Graf to choose
between Opel and Advantage, according to FOCUS (AP, 10/7).
