WHAT'S MORE EXCITING: THE MARINERS OR STADIUM POLITICS

Political leaders from Seattle, King County and the state of
WA will meet tomorrow with Gov. Mike Lowry in an effort to find a
way to finance a new stadium, according to this morning's SEATTLE
POST-INTELLIGENCER. The meeting will follow the final count of
the September 19 vote to fund a new stadium and Kingdome repairs
through a .1% sales tax, which is expected to fail. Lowry
yesterday ruled out a sports lottery to fund a stadium and said
the state is in "good enough economic shape that it can afford to
contribute to a baseball stadium without harming education or
health care." However, Lowry has said he will not call a special
session of the legislature to deal with the stadium unless a
there is consensus by city, county and state leaders on a plan,
and a guarantee that Republican House leaders will not try to
override previous Lowry vetoes. The P-I reports Republican
leaders "have begun to soften their previous insistence in
including veto overrides on the agenda of any special session"
(POST-INTELLIGENCER, 9/28),
