SOME FINAL (HOPEFULLY) THOUGHTS ON DEION SANDERS

The Cowboys signed Deion Sanders to a seven-year, $25M
contract that includes a no-trade clause and a signing bonus of
almost $13M (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 9/9). 49ers President Carmen
Policy: "We reached out and pulled every rabbit from the hat.
And when we ran out of rabbits, we even went for gerbils." To
Sanders: "Good luck to you, personally, and may your team fail"
(SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS, 9/9). In Ft. Worth, Jim Reeves writes,
"If the Cowboys don't win the Super Bowl, Jones and the Cowboys
will be the laughingstocks of the sporting world" (FT. WORTH
STAR-TELEGRAM, 9/9). Steelers President Dan Rooney, on why they
didn't bid: We're not in the carnival business" (MIAMI HERALD,
9/10). NBC's Will McDonough reported that Sanders will make
"another $20 million over the next five years from combined deals
from Pepsi and Nike" ("NFL ON NBC," 9/10). 49ers WR Jerry Rice,
to Bay Area media after yesterday's game: "You guys made it into
a circus. It takes a team effort to win a Super Bowl. It was an
insult what you guys wrote" (SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS, 9/11). In
Dallas, Richard Alm reports that Sanders' agent, Eugene Parker,
has said deals were on the way with a cereal, apparel line and
soft-drink. Parker said Sanders could sign between $7-10M in
endorsement deals by the end of this year (DALLAS MORNING NEWS,
9/10).
