     NBC's Bob Costas, on Friday's "Baseball Night in America"
broadcast:  "The thing I like best about the wild-card race is
that it has what all great drama requires:  clarity" (USA TODAY,
8/28).  In Baltimore, Milton Kent writes of Costas on TBN:  "Now
that his objections are on the record, we're sure that Costas
won't make a habit of drilling the viewer home with them each
week" (Baltimore SUN, 8/28)....The PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER examines
Bell Atlantic's "video dialtone network" on the Jersey Shore,
with the on-screen purchase of a Phillies cap one of the examples
of possible uses (PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER, 8/27).... The Sabres
have hired Pete Weber as their new play-by-play voice
(Sabres)....The ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH examines the world of
Cybersports -- with the following listed as "must-see" areas:
ABC Sports on AOL, ESPNET SportsZone, MLB's @Bat, NandO.Net
Sports Server, NHL Open Net, the online version of SI (Web and
CompuServe), SportsLine USA, and Team NFL (ST. LOUIS POST-
DISPATCH, 8/27)....The ORLANDO SENTINEL examines The Golf
Channel's progress, with the production getting high marks but
the channel still lagging in terms of carriage on cable systems
(ORLANDO SENTINEL, 8/28).
