JIGGS' IRE IS UP -- NO LOVE LOST FOR OLD TEAM

Jiggs McDonald, the former Islanders SportsChannel /play-by-
play man who will move to the Maple Leafs' local broadcasts this
season, "blasted" the Islanders, the club he covered for 15
seasons. According to William Houston of the GLOBE & MAIL,
McDonald "charged that Islanders management uses 'Gestapo'
tactics in dealing with the media, is a public-relations disaster
and does little or nothing to promote the team in the Long Island
communities." McDonald took particular aim at Islanders VP of
Communications Pat Calabria, a former Newsday hockey reporter.
McDonald: "I don't think any PR man ever treated Pat the way he
treats the media. You're not even allowed to smile around
there." McDonald, on the Islanders' fan support: "They're
really in trouble. I don't think they'll have a season's ticket
base of 5,000 this year" (Toronto GLOBE & MAIL, 8/24).
