OILERS, LOCAL OFFICIALS APPEAR HEADED FOR COURT BATTLE

Lawyers for the Oilers met with attorneys from the city of
Houston and Harris County yesterday as U.S. District Judge Lynn
Hughes unsuccessfully tried to mediate a solution between the
parties, according to this morning's HOUSTON CHRONICLE. Hughes
suggested that both parties meet again today before a 3pm hearing
in an attempt to settle the suit filed by the Oilers against the
city's wish to prevent a potential move. However, city and
county representative John O'Quinn said yesterday that no deal
can be struck and further meetings would be unnecessary. Hughes
issued a temporary restraining order yesterday after the team
filed suit, preventing the city, county or Astrodome USA dome
from any actions until today's hearing (John Williams, HOUSTON
CHRONICLE, 8/24). In this morning's DALLAS MORNING NEWS, Chiefs
Owner Lamar Hunt, an original member of the AFL with Oilers Owner
Bud Adams, says he supports Adams, but does not want the Oilers
in Nashville. Hunt: "Houston has been important to football.
The Astrodome, frankly, was never designed for football. The
Oilers have a very unattractive lease situation." Hunt did add,
"But I really like stability" (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 8/24).
