     Former 49ers coach BILL WALSH is reportedly involved in an
effort to bring an NFL team to the L.A. area (CHICAGO TRIBUNE,
8/23)....NY Liquor Authority officials have reportedly begun an
investigation into RUBEN SIERRA'S "undisclosed ownership
interest" in Jimmy's Bronx Cafe.  MLB has warned players to stay
away from the restaurant because it is frequented by "unsavory
characters" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 8/23)....The BOSTON HERALD reports
that PETER MCNEELEY manager, VINNIE VECCHIONE, was once the
target of an alleged Mafia hit over $100,000-plus in gambling
debts (BOSTON HERALD, 8/23)....Former Twin and Tiger DAN GLADDEN
and partner CLARK GRIFFITH will co-own the new Northern League
baseball team in Fargo, ND.  Griffith is son of former Twins
Owner CALVIN GRIFFITH (Minneapolis STAR-TRIBUNE, 8/22)....CBS'
Jane Robelot interviewed Orioles Vice Chair JOE FOSS and DR.
RALPH KUNCL of Johns Hopkins Univ. on the plan to sell of 5,000
extra seats for the September 6 game in which CAL RIPKEN is
scheduled to break Lou Gehrig's consecutive game record.  The
revenue from those seats will go toward the finding a cure for
ALS, or Lou Gehrig's Disease.  Foss said Ripken "was very
flattered and has expressed a termendous willingness to help in
anyway he can."  Ripken will autograph special tickets to be
given to donors at a post-season party ("CBS This Morning,"
8/23).
