JERRY JONES EYES 2004 -- WHEN COWBOY LOGO RIGHTS ARE FREE

Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones continued his assault on the NFL
and its Properties division yesterday by saying he wants to
"reclaim" the logo of the Cowboys and the right to license and
market the team's mark by 2004. Jones told the DALLAS MORNING
NEWS his timetable is based on when the NFL Trust expires. The
Trust, which was created by all teams and "assigns exclusive
rights to team trademarks and logos for commercial purposes to
NFL Properties," expires after the 2003 season and Jones said "he
has no intention of signing away the rights to the Cowboys
again." Jones: "Addressing this is the best way to still adhere
to the revenue sharing philosophy of the NFL, yet create
incentives to grow the pie and encourage investors in the NFL. I
view this as productive, not destructive." Jones said one of the
reasons he is speaking up now is because of the recent "overhaul"
at NFL Properties. Jones: "This is a time when NFL Properties
has had quite a management turnover and the (new) direction of
Properties is being formulated. I don't want it formulated
without identifying my intention. .. This is doing the right
thing for my fellow owners" (Rick Gosselin, DALLAS MORNING NEWS,
8/16).
