YANKS' EXPERT SAYS STADIUM PLAN WON'T SOLVE ACESS PROBLEMS

Vollmer Associates, a firm hired by the Yankees to assess
the most recent proposal by New York City to keep the team in the
Bronx, said "the improvements are inadequate and will not speed
traffic flow to and from Yankee Stadium," according to Richard
Sandomir of the N.Y. TIMES. After the analysis, Yankees General
Counsel David Sussman said, while the team and city will look to
meet again soon, "There isn't much additional time to get this
thing going." The team's lease expires in 2002 and the "city and
team have been squabling for two years about where the Yankees
will play after 2002." Vollmer's conclusions were based on plans
by architectural firm HOK. The analysis found "the highway
system and infrastructure" have so many existing problems, new
garages and other modifications wouldn't "change the traffic
impediments to the site" nor "alleviate the overriding
impediment," the time it takes to get out of the stadium -- one-
and-a-half to three hours (N.Y. TIMES, 8/16).
