ILLINI'S ADVERTISING LOOKS TO BOOST FOOTBALL ATTENDANCE

The Univ. of Illinois is increasing the marketing and
advertising of its football team, according to the CHICAGO
TRIBUNE. The Big Ten school's "advertising effort is
unprecedented, not only in promotional dollars but in awareness
throughout the state." TV and radio ads are running with the
slogan, "The Pride is Back," and the theme is echoed in billboard
and print ads. The school averaged just over 60,000 for seven
home games last year, and the Illini haven't sold out their
entire home schedule since '87. Illinois Associate A.D. Bill
Yonan believes the campaign will "generate awareness, and that's
a start in the right direction. At least we've refocused our
attention on the Chicago market, which can be big for us" (George
Lazarus, CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 7/31).
