SENIOR PGA EVENT IN SEATTLE LOOKING FOR A SPONSOR

The future of the PGA Senior Northwest Classic is "in danger
unless a new sponsor can be found by December 1," according to
the SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER. GTE, which has sponsored the
event since '86, announced that they will not renew their deal
after this year's tournament, September 4-10. GTE officials said
the event "no longer fit in with corporate priorities."
Tournament Dir Rick Larson "believes the departure of GTE signals
an era where sporting events face more difficulty attracting
sponsors" and said that the tournament might have to seek out
multiple sponsors to replace GTE. Larson: "It was a lot easier
to sponsor a tournament in the 80's and certainly it was a lot
less money. ... Back in the '80's many, many companies could have
handled the title sponsor to an event such as this" (Angelo
Bruscas, SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER, 7/19).
