AROUND THE BELTWAY, PEOPLE SPEAK OUT AGAINST FACILITIES

Before a "largely skeptical and sometimes raucous crowd" in
MD last night, Redskins representatives described their plan for
a new stadium to the Prince George's County Council. More than
350 residents showed up for the hearing on Owner Jack Kent
Cooke's proposal to build a 78,000-seat stadium. Cooke has asked
the county to put the stadium proposal on a fast-track so that it
can be completed in time for the '97 season (Neal & Lonhardt,
WASHINGTON POST, 7/18).
DC ARENA: A public hearing before the National Capital
Planning Commission and officials from the DC Government
addressed residents' concerns that the proposed MCI Center's
closing of G Street will "erode" Washington's "unique baroque
style." Last week, Bullets/Capitals Owner Abe Pollin won
approval from the Chinatown Steering Committee for the project
after submitting a new design for the facility (WASHINGTON TIMES,
7/18).
