HAWKS UNVEIL NEW DUDS; CAPS LOGO A HIT; ARE WARRIORS NEXT?

For the first time in 23 years, the Hawks will have a new
logo. They presented the new look on Friday, with a white home
uniform "emblazoned with a fierce red hawk whose massive talons
grip a basketball." The road uniforms are "a black bleeding into
a dark red." Both uniforms feature red, yellow, and gold trim
along with the hawk (ATLANTA CONSTITUTION, 6/24). CNN's Mike
Glenn: "I like them, I think that's the new image ... bringing
out the characters to life size almost" ("This Week In the NBA,"
CNN, 6/25).
ROCKETS: The Rockets' new logo will reportedly feature
a "sharp-toothed, needle-nose red, white and blue rocket
ship, exhaust fumes and all, circling a basketball." To
"say it's a drastic change ... is putting it mildly," writes
David Barron of the HOUSTON CHRONICLE. The team officially
introduces the new look Wednesday (HOUSTON CHRONICLE, 6/24).
OTHER LOGO NEWS: Warriors President Andy Dolich said
his team will probably have a new logo and colors after the
'96-97 season. Dolich: "Logo changes become another
potential source of excitement to the fans base, and
obviously revenue has something to do with it. ... It's
obvious that we have not had the most impactful logo in
sports over the last decade" (John Hillyer, S.F. EXAMINER,
6/18)....In Washington, an America Online poll by the
Capitals showed that 89% approved of their new logo. The
team received 987 responses as of Friday at 4:00pm and 863
like the new Eagle look (Capitals)....In Baltimore, the new
AHL team will be called the Bandits (BALTIMORE SUN, 6/25).
