SELIG WANTS BREWER FANS ON THEIR FEET FOR A NEW STADIUM

Brewers Owner Bud Selig said yesterday that the team's
record should not influence the building of a new stadium,
according to this morning's MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL. Selig's
remarks follow statements from WI Senate Majority Leader Michael
Ellis who said the Brewers' losing record hurt their support for
a new stadium. Interviewed on WTMJ radio, Selig called Ellis'
remarks "very disappointing." Selig also responded to criticism
of the team's public funding desires by saying that if the team
signed a long-term lease that produces between $6-8B, "forgetting
the social value, forgetting what it means to the city ... sheer
economics dictate it to be good policy." Selig urged fans to
call their legislators: "It's time for the millions of Brewers
fans in the state of Wisconsin to begin to speak up" (Bob
Wolfley, MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL, 6/16). In Boston, Larry
Whiteside takes an in-depth look at the Brewers' plight. Two
things have "put the Brewers on the brink," an unproductive farm
system, and County Stadium. Whiteside writes there are no moving
fans in Milwaukee yet, but "there is no guarantee," either
(BOSTON GLOBE, 6/16).
