THE GRANDDADDY OF THEM ALL RAISES PRICES TO MATCH NAME
The Rose Bowl will raise ticket prices for the '96 game 58.7%, from $48 to $75, helping increase the game's payout to the Big Ten and Pac 10 from $6.7M each to $8.1M each. Pac 10 Commissioner Tom Hansen, a member of the Tournament of Roses Management Committee, told the L.A. TIMES the move "was spawned by the beginning of the Bowl Alliance," and is now priced accordingly to "events of similar stature." Also cited for the increase was the "heightened interest" in the game the past two years. Hansen: "To keep the Rose Bowl as a premier game, we have to be competitive with the Alliance bowls. They are pooling money to pay competing teams about $8.4 million and we have to compete with that." The Fiesta Bowl charges between $55-$150; Fed/Ex Orange Bowl tickets will be $50 for this year's game. Nokia Sugar Bowl Exec Dir Troy Mathieu told the TIMES their prices run from $50-$100, depending on location (Jim Hodges, L.A. TIMES, 5/23).
