INDY DRIVER ST. JAMES NEEDS SPONSORS IN ORDER TO RACE

Lyn St. James, the only current female Indy-car driver,
needs $500,000 in sponsorship support in order to qualify to race
in the Indianapolis 500, according to Bruce Horovitz in this
morning's USA TODAY. St. James' three main sponsors from last
year -- Reebok, Lee Jeans, and J.C. Penney -- have all dropped
her after she "placed in the back of the pack the past two
years." Negotiations with two undisclosed sponsors broke down
this week, and St. James said she is "operating in a panic mode."
Horovitz reports that marketing experts "are confounded" on the
lack of support for St. James. J.C. Penney spokesperson Hank
Rusman said the company wanted to sponsor her for the entire
season, but St. James "was unable to land other sponsors to help
underwrite costs." Reebok spokesperson Dave Fogelson said their
connection with St. James was "a bit of a stretch" since Reebok's
shoes are not used (USA TODAY, 5/12).
