PORTLAND STATE LOOKS TO GO BIG TIME, JOIN BIG SKY

Portland State will submit a bid to join the Big Sky
Conference at the conference's meeting in Ogden, UT, in May.
Final approval could be given in December. PSU, which competes
in Division II in most sports, will move to Division I for all
sports except football, where the conference competes on the
Division I-AA level. PSU will also have to revive its men's
basketball program, which was disbanded in '81. The school will
have to increase its scholarships from 75 to 150. PSU's Viking
Club booster group is seeking 50 area businesses to donate
$10,000 each to cover the cost of the scholarships (Bob Robinson,
Portland OREGONIAN, 4/19).
