MCCORMACK SEES TENNIS' RESURGENCE AS AN OVERHEAD SLAM

Founder and Chair of IMG MARK MCCORMACK says tennis is "on
the road to recovery." He cites the "fantastic" rivalry of PETE
SAMPRAS and ANDRE AGASSI, and the rise of young women players,
such as MARTINA HINGIS and VENUS WILLIAMS, as key ingredients to
a resurgence in interest in the game. IMG is "very interested"
in the women's tour as it took over marketing of the WTA,
guaranteeing $16M in sponsorship fees (Sal Ruibal, USA TODAY,
3/29). This weekend, McCormack will preside over the dedication
of the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center on the campus of William
& Mary in Williamsburg, VA. The facility, named for him and his
wife, Betsy Nagelsen, will be the tennis center at his alma mater
and the site of the International Tennis Association's Women's
Tennis Hall of Fame (Linda Dozoretz Communications). ANNE PERSON
WORCESTER is profiled in the latest issue of TENNIS. Worcester,
who was "instrumental" in merging the WTA and the WTC into the
WTA Tour: "For the first time ever we are under one umbrella,
and we're operating in a more businesslike manner" (TENNIS,
4/95).
