TORONTO'S LOSSES FROM STRIKE EXAMINED ON CNBC

CNBC's Scott Cohn reported on the attitude toward baseball
in Toronto as no opening day approaches. Since Ontario's law
doesn't allow replacement workers, the Jays will play in 6,000
seat Grant Field in Dunedin, FL instead of Skydome. Economic
consequences for the usual home of the Blue Jays will be
significant. Cohn reported that last season's strike cost the
team $17M in ticket sales, and the City of Toronto estimates that
the team pumps $50M into the local economy. Cohn: "No home games
means no $50 million." Businesses that depend on the team all
stand to suffer. Toronto Mayor Barbara Hall: "There's an
economic impact and there's also a real sense of loss in terms of
people's lifestyle" ("Sports View," CNBC, 3/27).
LAND OF THE RISING SALARIES? "Bloomberg Business Report's"
Bob Goldsholl reported on the exodus of some major league ball
players to Japan. Goldsholl: "Japanese fans are now wondering
whether their game is headed down the money, star-driven path of
the American game" (PBS, 3/28).
