ORANGE BOWL VOTE TODAY
The Orange Bowl Committee is expected today to approve the move of the FedEx Orange Bowl from Orange Bowl Stadium to Joe Robbie Stadium (JRS) after the '96 season. Football conference commissioners will decide this morning if they will give the "city of Miami more time to solidify plans for a proposed $30 million Orange Bowl renovation project" that was unveiled Friday -- but "it might be too late." JRS is seen as "better equipped" for the game and many don't like the idea of playing the Univ. of Miami on its home field for a national championship. Another issue is the Alliance's plan of rotating potential national championships between the Dial Fiesta, USF&G Sugar, and FedEx Orange Bowls. However, if the committee votes to stay in Miami, the Alliance "appears ready to replace the Orange Bowl in the rotation" with Jacksonville Outback Steakhouse Gator Bowl (Susan Miller Degnan, MIAMI HERALD, 10/11). The MIAMI HERALD approved the proposed move: "Not only does JRS have superior facilities, but it's a more neutral site" (MIAMI HERALD, 10/9).
