NAMES IN THE NEWS

New WTA CEO ANN PERSON WORCESTER is profiled in today's
TAMPA TRIBUNE. She "inherits an intimidating list of concerns"
on the tour, from the absence of Monica Seles and Jennifer
Capriati to the lack of a title sponsor for the Tour. But she
remains optimistic. Person: "Sports sponsorship, it's tough.
There are fewer dollars out there. More sports, less money. But
we have had an outstanding summer of tennis this year. ... We're
thrilled that Capriati is coming back" (H.A. Branham, TAMPA
TRIBUNE, 9/23)....PAT GILLICK "might be interested in putting
together a group to buy the California Angels" (Peter Pascarelli,
THE SPORTING NEWS, 9/26 issue)....CBS Sports President DAVID
KENIN is interviewed in the latest edition of INSIDE MEDIA.
Kenin said CBS Sports is in a "pretty solid position to look and
to hunt and to compete where we want to." Kenin believes that
the absence of major pro sports from the net's schedule reflects
a "certain degree of cyclicality" among the network contenders.
Kenin also hints "a lot of new things are currently happening;
we just don't have them concluded." Kenin: "We would love to
have the major league sports, but we're actually going to be more
financially successful without them" (INSIDE MEDIA, 9/21 issue).
