Unusually Cold, Wet Weather To Begin Australian Open In Mebourne

With play underway at the Australian Open, the weather in Melbourne is making for "kind of a different first day" than what fans and players are used to. Tennis Channel’s Mark Knowles: "It is 65 degrees. ... Normally you think 95 degrees, super hot." Tennis Channel’s Steve Weissman added, “A ton of rain in qualifying. ... But in a few days, triple digits. Don’t worry, it’ll be that summertime in Australia.” Jim Courier: “Thursday, Friday it’s going to be hot out. This is a nice way to start the season here, though, at the majors” (“Tennis Channel Live,” 1/14). ESPN’s Brad Gilbert said of the coming heat wave, "That’s what the proper temperature is supposed to be here. We want to see the players have to deal with that adversity of the weather here” (“Australian Open,” ESPN2, 1/15).
