AGA's Freeman: U.S. Sports Leagues Will Embrace Legalized Betting

Sports leagues will ultimately embrace legalized sports gambling in the wake of today’s decision by the Supreme Court to review whether to overturn the 25-year ban on sports gambling outside of Nevada, predicted American Gaming Association President & CEO Geoff Freeman. “The leagues will see the writing on the wall with regard to PASPA,” Freeman told reporters via conference call, referring to the Professional & Amateur Sports Protection Act passed in '92.

To date, the major U.S. sports leagues and the NCAA are actively opposed to New Jersey’s attempt to be exempt from PASPA, which gives the leagues standing to object to legalizing sports gaming. The state had lost at all lower court levels, so today’s Supreme Court decision suddenly gave impetus to the move to legalize. While the NBA has suggested it is open to changes in the law, other leagues have not. Freeman, who said he has had meetings with all the leagues, added many have begun studying overseas sports markets where gambling is legal. The Supreme Court could hear oral arguments as early as October, with a decision as much as a year away.
