MLB Sets Another Record With $77M In Postseason Compensation

MLB distributed $76.63M in postseason player compensation, up 10% from last year and another league record. The money, generated from 50% of the gate receipts of the Wild Card games and 60% of the first three games of each LDS and first four games of each LCS and World Series, is largely a function of the ballpark capacities of the participating teams and ticket prices. This year’s overall postseason compensation pool breaks last year’s mark of $69.88M and marks the third time in five seasons a new record has been set. It has grown 23% in the last two years.

The World Series-champion Cubs divided their $27.59M portion of the postseason pool into 66 full shares, 8.7 partial shares and four cash awards. The Cubs’ full share value of $368,871.59 is down slightly from the Royals’ full player share of $370,069.03 in '15. However, the Cubs divided a larger overall pool into more full shares. Postseason distributions were again given to each of the 10 playoff teams.
