NFL Opposes Players' Deposition Request In Prescription Drug Case

The NFL is objecting to what it calls "harassing" deposition demands of Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones and Colts Owner Jim Irsay made by former players suing the NFL over prescription drug use. In a letter today to the federal judge overseeing the case, NFL outside counsel Covington & Burling wrote, “That Plaintiffs would seek, for example, to leverage Mr. Irsay’s personal struggle with pain medication to justify a deposition is improper regardless of his level of seniority.” The letter stated the former players wanted to depose Jones because “he has made public statements in 2016 regarding the injury status of quarterback Tony Romo and other current Cowboys players.”

The former players’ lawsuit alleges they were improperly prescribed medication for their injuries by team trainers and doctors. The NFL asked Judge William Alsup to deny the deposition requests or delay them until less intrusive discovery had been completed. The case, Evans et al v Arizona Cardinals Football Club, LLC et al, is being heard in federal district court in Northern California.
