Rome's Bid For '24 Games Plays Up Its Numerous Iconic Venues

Rome 2024 Chair Luca di Montezemolo today “revealed a list of ‘iconic venues’” used in the bid that “will take full advantage of Rome’s historic settings and Italy’s television-friendly backdrops.” Plans call for the marathon route to wind through St. Peter’s Square and finish “under the Arch of Constantine in front of the Colosseum.” Beach volleyball would be played at the Circus Maximus and sailing would “take place off Sardinia, Sicily or the Amalfi coast.” The center of the bid project is the Foro Italico, which features the Stadio Olimpico used for the ’60 Games with an adjacent aquatics venue (AP, 9/24).
