L.A. City Council Unanimously Approves Contract To Bid For '24 Games

The USOC named L.A. the official U.S. candidate to host the '24 Games this afternoon, after the L.A. City Council unanimously approved a contract to proceed with a bid. L.A. 2024 Chair Casey Wasserman, L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti, Council President Herb Wesson and top USOC officials are attending a press conference set to begin in Santa Monica shortly before 1:00pm PT.

All 15 council members expressed enthusiastic support for a bid, but they gave themselves – or their successors in office – plenty of chances to back out in the future. Amendments to the contract explicitly require new acts of council to approve future direct expenditures, financial guarantees, land acquisition for new venues, and fee waivers for use of city venues that might be required to host, City Administrative Officer Miguel Santana said. “This is the engagement, not the wedding,” Wesson said. “And now we are in the pre-nup stages of putting together what the agreement will actually be."
