FCC Fines ESPN For EAS Tones In "Olympus Has Fallen" Trailer

The FCC said that it has fined ESPN $280,000 for misusing the Emergency Alert System warning tones. Viacom also was fined $1.12M and NBC Universal earlier paid a $530,000 fine. ESPN in '13 was one of a number of networks that ran promos for the feature film "Olympus Has Fallen," which used the EAS tones. FCC rules do not allow TV channels to use those tones outside of a real emergency or a test. The fines first were handed down last March. ESPN requested a reduction, which the FCC officially denied today. ESPN declined comment on the matter.
