Presence Of NHL Draft Prospect Buoys First OHL Game In Buffalo

Buffalo will host its first OHL hockey game tonight when the Niagara IceDogs take on the Erie Otters at First Niagara Center. The Sabres bought out an Otters home date in order to host the contest and had sold more than 9,000 tickets as of yesterday. Many of those tickets likely were bought by Sabres fans hoping to get a glance at Otters C Connor McDavid, the presumptive No. 1 pick in the '15 NHL Draft. Sabres President Ted Black said, "Buffalo is a very knowledgeable hockey fan base. ... They know who Connor McDavid plays for. I think that's certainly the marquee attraction."

Black anticipates attendance upwards of 12,000 with an active walk-up crowd. Tickets are $15, but only $10 for Sabres season-ticket holders. The Sabres and Otters have agreed to split all profits above what the Sabres paid the Otters to host the game. Otters merchandise will be for sale in the Sabres' team store, and Black said that the split on those proceeds "is obviously more heavy toward the Otters." The Sabres have promoted the game on their website, TV and radio broadcasts, and by reaching out to season-ticket holders directly.
