Bobcats' Whitfield Bows Out Of Consideration For NBPA Exec Dir Job

Remove another name from the list of possible candidates to fill the vacant job of NBPA Exec Dir. Bobcats President Fred Whitfield met last month with Reilly Partners, the search firm retained by the NBPA to find a replacement for ousted union leader Billy Hunter. But Whitfield said today that he is bowing out of any further consideration for the job. “It was an honor and very flattering to be considered as a candidate for such an important and prestigious role,” Whitfield said. “I have the utmost respect for the NBPA and its president, Chris Paul. Right now, it is just too important of a time, and in my heart I feel like I owe it to my owner, organization, and the community to see things through here.” The Bobcats are beginning their rebrand to become the Hornets next season.

Paul, in an interview in October, said there was no time frame for finding a new NBPA Exec Dir. Earlier this year, longtime basketball exec Steve Mills had been listed as another possible candidate for the NBPA position, but he was named President & GM of the Knicks in September, taking him out of consideration.
