Magic Deny Report That Howard Can "Decide Fate" Of GM, Coach

The Magic today moved to "knock down" an ESPN report claiming that team officials promised C Dwight Howard that he "can decide the fate of both GM Otis Smith and coach Stan Van Gundy at the end of the season if he signs an extension." The team in a statement said, "The only person(s) who have the final say on coaches and management is the Orlando Magic ownership" (ORLANDOSENTINEL.com, 3/13).

According to ESPN, indications are that Magic President Alex Martins, "not Smith, is presiding over attempts to keep Howard in Orlando." Magic officials for weeks have been telling other NBA teams that they "intend to keep Howard" at the behest of team Owner Rich DeVos (ESPN.com, 3/13).
