NHL, NHLPA Come To Agreement On New Social Media Policy

The NHL and NHLPA “came to an agreement on a social media policy for players that effectively shuts down players on game day.” GMs were “informed of the new policy in a letter” from NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly, in which he notes that “the matter was ‘collectively bargained’ with the players’ association.” Any use of social media such as Twitter or Facebook that “violates the rules may be subject to an undisclosed punishment” (THESTAR.com, 9/15).

NHL Senior Dir of Social Media Michael DiLorenzo confirmed on Twitter, “The @NHL social media policy went out to our clubs last night.” Coyotes LW Paul Bissonnette, one of the NHL’s most-popular Twitter users with more than 132,000 followers, wrote on his account, “People asking about NHL's new policy on Twitter. I think its good. I don't even play much and I don't tweet on game days. Plenty of off days.” Islanders LW Michael Grabner tweeted, “Heard there will be a social media policy in the NHL..good thing most our my tweets are about food, napping or video games #dontwanttobefined.”
