NHL OWNERS TODAY CONFIRM THAT PLAYERSWILL BE LOCKED OUT

With the NHL CBA scheduled toexpire at 12:01am ET tonight, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman today announced that the owners will lock out theplayers, saying, “It is my somber duty to report that at today’s meeting, theNHL Board of Governors unanimously reconfirmed that NHL teams will not play atthe expiration of the CBA until we have a new system that fixes the economicproblems facing our game.”

More Bettman: “This action is not taken lightly – or eagerly – and whenthe union wants to stop the posturing and acknowledges that the problems are asreal as our Governors' resolve to fix them, we will be here, ready to make afair and meaningful agreement that will usher in a new era for our game. … Idid tell the teams that they could release their buildings going out 30 daysbecause I don’t see any way that we could do anything in the next 30 days toget the players on the ice.”

NHLPA Exec Dir Bob Goodenow today released a statementthat read in part, “An honest partnership can never be achieved under theLeague’s ‘my way or the highway’ approach.  Partnerships are built onrespect, trust and willingness to compromise.  Partnerships are not builtthrough confrontation.  Nonetheless, Gary and the Owners have chosen,through a lockout, to try to force Players to accept a system they know Playerswould never agree to” (THE DAILY).


ASTROS P ROGER CLEMENS SET TO PITCH H-E-B’SLINE OF MEATS

ADWEEK reported that Astros PRoger Clemens has signed athree-year endorsement deal with H-E-B to promote the grocer’s line offully-cooked meats, fresh ground breef and Prime 1 steaks and pork chops. Clemens, his wife and four sons will befeatured in four 30-second spots, via The Richards Group, Dallas,airing throughout Texas. Additionally, Clemens and H-E-B will “worktogether on promotions, in-store visits and local initiatives (ADWEEK.com,9/14).


BEARING POINT GETTING THREE MORE YEARSOUT OF LEFTY

Bearing Point today inked Phil Mickelson to a three-yearextension of his endorsement deal. Mickelson will continue to wear the Bearing Point logo on his headwearduring tournament play and other promotions. The relationship between Mickelson and Bearing Point began in ’00 (Bearing Point).


AOL LAUNCHES ONLINE SPORTS RADIO PROGRAM,“THE SHOW”

AOL today launched a live,daily, online sports radio program, “The Show,” hosted by former NFL kicker Jess Atkinson, at noon ET. The program allows AOL members to ask livequestions via instant messages, email or telephone. “The Show” is available on-demand for 24hours. Bob Costas and Dodgers Senior VP Tommy Lasorda were guests on today’s show (AOL).
