NEWS FROM THE ATHENS GAMES, DAY 14: BUSH CAMPAIGN REFUSES

The AP reports that President Bush’s re-election campaign today“refused a request by the [USOC] … to pull a television ad that mentions theOlympics.” The ads will continue throughSunday, the final day of the Games. Campaign spokesperson ScottStanzel: “We are on firm legal ground to mention the Olympics to make afactual point in a political advertisement” (AP,8/26).


COWBOYS OWNER TO BE FEATURED WEEKLY ONNEW CHANNEL

Comcast and the Cowboys todayofficially announced a partnership to create a digital cable channel – DallasCowboys Channel – devoted entirely to the team. The channel will debut September 8, four days before the opening of the’04 NFL season, on the Comcast Digital Plus lineup at no extra charge to 1.3million subscribers in the Dallasarea. Programming will include coverageof press conferences, interviews, call-in shows and “Owners Desk,” a weeklyreport from Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones(Cowboys).


WHITE SOX UNVEIL PLANS FOR SCOUT SEATINGBEHIND HOME PLATE

The White Sox today unveiledplans for a new seating area to be completed prior to the ’05 season directlybehind home plate at U.S. Cellular Field. The 314-seat area called Scout Seating, a portion of the club’s Phase Vrenovations, will feature pre- and post-game access to a 5,000-square-footrestaurant, in-seat wait service and a special parking area near theballpark. Prices will be $200 for thefront row and $170 for the remaining rows, and the seats will be sold inseason-ticket packages. All Phase Vrenovations are designed by HKS (WhiteSox).


WRANGLER SUPPORTING NEW DALE EARNHARDTJR. SWEEPSTAKES

BRANDWEEK reports thatWrangler Jeans today began running TV, print and radio ads “hitching itself tothe Nextel Cup with a new promotion dangling a chance to win a trip around thetrack” with Dale Earnhardt Jr. onOctober 26 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. Thesweeps runs through September 27, and ads are slated to run in ESPN TheMagazine and Rolling Stone, as well as on ESPN, Discovery Network and Spike TVprogramming (BRANDWEEK.com,8/26).


BUZZER BEATERS

ESPNews is reporting that theNCAA today turned down former USC WR MikeWilliams’ appeal for reinstatement after entering the ’04 NFL Draft (ESPNews, 8/26).

The Goodyear Blimp, equippedwith JVC equipment, will provide HD aerial coverage for ABC’s “MNF” broadcastsduring the ’04 season (BRANDWEEK.com,8/26).

The Celtics today inked adeal with Student Advantage to offer discount ticket prices to StudentAdvantage Cardholders (Student Advantage).


A LIGHTER BUZZ

After theAtlantic City Surf fired PA announcer GregMaiuro on Monday for saying the team’s playing of “YMCA” was “sponsored byGovernor Jim McGreevey,” the APreports that the team today offered Maiuro and scoreboard operator Marco Cerino, who resigned, their jobsback “following a plea” by McGreevey for the team to “overlook their jokesabout his sexuality” (AP, 8/26).
