MALCOLM GLAZER NOT MEETINGWITH IRISH MANU INVESTORS

Contrary to several reports,REUTERS writes Malcolm Glazer “has no plans to meet with Irish investorsJohn Magnier and JP McManus” today to discuss the futureownership of Manchester United. A source said that “categorically” the meetingwas never scheduled. The source also “declined to comment on whether McManusand Magnier would consider an offer from Glazer” (REUTERS,8/10).


SONYENTERTAINMENT TO SPONSOR HD NFL BROADCASTS ON CBS

CBS Sports today announcedthat Sony Electronics will sponsor threeHD NFL broadcasts each week during the regular season, as well as all of thenet’s playoff games. Fox previously announced that it will air regular andpostseason games in HD. ABC is airing its preseason and “MNF” games in HD aswell (THE DAILY).


CBS SPORTSPRESIDENT SEAN McMANUS DISCUSSES PGA CHAMPIONSHIP

CBS Sports President SeanMcManus hosted a conference call this afternoon to discuss the net’scoverage of the ’04 PGA Championship at Whistling Straits in Kohler, WI.  McManus, when asked if he expects ratings to suffer because of NBC’s Athens Gamescoverage, said jokingly, “We were told the Olympics start September 15, I don’tknow what your calendar says.”  McManus, on expected ratings: “Thecompetition is going to be a little tougher than it normally is on thisweekend, but like all programming, especially golf, to a large extent ourratings are going to be determined by the quality of the leaderboard and thequality of the competition. ... The single most important determining factor isthe presence, or lack thereof, of Tiger Woods” (THE DAILY).


TERMIDOR TERMITE PROTECTIONTO SPONSOR THE HURRICANES

BASF Professional PestControl today announced a multiyear sponsorship deal with the Hurricanes. Under the partnership, BASF’s Termidor Termite Protection brand will receivebroadcast exposure and signage at RBC Center. Termidor also sponsors theLightning, Triple-A Int’l League Durham Bulls and NC State Univ. (Termidor).


AAA CHARLOTTE KNIGHTS STILL SEEKING DOWNTOWN BALLPARK

The CHARLOTTE OBSERVERreports that the Triple-A Int’l League Charlotte Knights will present aproposal for a downtown stadium, but a majority of Mecklenburg Countycommissioners “are committed to putting a park” on the land targeted by theclub. Last month, the commissioners endorsed holding a November referendum on$69M in park bonds, which would include $24[M] to turn the county-owned landinto an urban park.” Tonight, the commissioners will decide whether to approvethe proposed September 8 public hearing date on the bonds (CHARLOTTEOBSERVER, 8/10).

The woman accusing KobeBryant of rape today filed a civil suit in federal court in Denver against Bryant for an unspecified amount of monetary damages (REUTERS,8/10).

The City of Chicago has“rejected a building permit application for ramp repair work performed atWrigley Field and instructed the Chicago Cubs to provide additional informationabout the repairs ‘as soon as possible’” (CHICAGOTRIBUNE, 8/10).

South Carolina-based cc&cmanagement group has reached an agreement with the United States Adult SoccerAssociation to become its exclusive marketing agent (cc&c).

EA Sports today announcedNuggets F Carmelo Anthony, Spurs G Tony Parker and Grizzlies F PauGasol as the cover athletes for “NBA Live 2005.” Anthony will appear onthe game throughout North America, while Parker and Gasol will appear on thecover in France and Spain, respectively (EA Sports).

Mutual of Omaha todayannounced that U.S. Olympic swimmers Amanda Beard, Kaitlin Sandeno,Brendan Hansen and Aaron Peirsol will endorse the company throughits Gold Medal Team through the ’08 Olympics. Mutual of Omaha has been a USASwimming sponsor since ’01 (Mutual of Omaha).

Sports Marketing firm ZymanGroup Founder & CEO and former Coca-Cola CMO Sergio Zyman todayappeared on CNBC’s “Power Lunch,” where he said, “I think an overallover-the-top sponsorship of the Olympics gives you great awareness, but you’vegot to bring it down to sales and to the bottom line. If not, it’s not worthit” (“Power Lunch,” CNBC, 8/10).

Venus and Serena Williams appeared this morning on“Live! With Regis & Kelly” and NBC’s “Today” before heading to Athens. On “Live!,” Venus displayed her design of an Olympic Village apartment forNYC2012’s Olympic bid (THE DAILY).

Altitude Sports &Entertainment today announced a multiyear TV rights deal with the Univ. of Northern Colorado to air as many as ten UNC events, including two football games (AltitudeSports & Entertainment).


A LIGHTER BUZZ

ENTERTAINMENTWEEKLY notes that the Mets’ audio engineering crew allowed the magazine to suggestmusic for a game in July. Some of their choices “made them nervous (CheapTrick’s ‘Surrender’ for an opponent’s pitcher change).” Mets Producer of Video& Entertainment Vito Vitiello: “We don’t want to show up theopposing players. We used to play [Dr. Evil’s] laugh from Austin Powers aftera strikeout and got in a little trouble from the MLB” (ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY,8/13 issue).
