COUNTING DOWN TO TONIGHT’S DEBUT OF FSN’S “THE SPORTS LIST”

FSN tonight premieres “The Sports List,” a 30-minute show hosted by Summer Sanders that counts down the top ten rankings on a variety of sports-related categories. Tonight’s episode features the top ten “biggest chokes” in sports history (FSN).

MEDIA LIFE writes, “Realistically, it would be too much to expect the show to average 100,000 viewers. … But if FSN reruns the show during the days and late nights, and if the production quality is good, it could be a nice little challenger to [ESPN's countdowns as part of their 25th anniversary] in terms of quality. That’s definitely an area where `I, Max’ fails” (MEDIALIFE.com, 7/19).

TODAY’S ARTICLES OF INTEREST

The WASHINGTON POST 's La Canfora & Demasio write, “The Redskins payroll in 2004 will exceed $110[M], breaking the previous record of $102[M] set by the Denver Broncos in 2001.” The average NFL payroll last season was $71.77M. Redskins execs “refute the notion that they are mortgaging the team’s future and say they are positioned to avoid running up against cap problems at least through 2007. … Yet, several officials from other NFL clubs who have looked at Washington’s salary structure said they believe the bills on the Redskins’ offseason spending will come due sooner than the Washington front office predicts” (WASHINGTON POST).

The L.A. TIMES’ Mike Bresnahan notes that the NHL players who “expected huge contract offers after the July 1 start of the free-agency period have been hit with plodding salary negotiations, a product of a quickly changing climate that favors phrases such as ‘cost certainty’ and ‘sorry, not this summer.’ The most affected players are the point-scorers, the high-churning forwards who bring the fans out of their seats—but apparently not the general managers and owners out of theirs” (L.A. TIMES).

  • USADA is doing its best, but theirs is a difficult task.
