QUADRENNIAL EURO 2004 KICKSOFF SATURDAY IN PORTUGAL

Euro 2004, thequadrennial European soccer championship, kicks off in Portugal tomorrow, andat a press conference today, UEFA President Lennart Johansson announcedthat 94% of the tickets have been sold for the 24 matches in the first round ofthe tournament.  Johansson: “With atotal of 1.2 million tickets and relayed to hundreds of millions of fans viatelevision around the world, the organization and preparation for a tournamentlike this is enormous” (EURO2004.com, 6/11).

The N.Y. TIMESnoted that Portugal has invested $780M to build and refurbish ten stadiums,“more than any other host of the event has ever spent.”  The “most spectacular stadium by far wascommissioned by Braga, a northern town with a population of just 115,000.”While the stadium is the smallest of the new ones with a capacity of 30,000 andwill be used for two first-round games only, “it has become something of anicon for this year’s Euro Cup,” appearing in ads for the event (N.Y. TIMES,6/10).


NIKE TO AIR FIRST “FRANK” TV SPOT WITHOUTTIGER THIS WEEKEND

SPORTSBUSINESSJOURNAL reports that Nike will begin airing the eighth and possibly final“Frank” ad, via Wieden & Kennedy, during this weekend’s coverage of the PGATour Buick Classic.  The spot is the“first not to include Tiger Woods; instead a host of Nike golf endorserssneak into Woods’ garage to inspect the One ball and Woods’ new Ignite driver,with Frank charging $20 a swing. Among the golfers are Rory Sabatini, GracePark, Lanny Wadkins and David Duval.”  When Duval’s swing breaks the window ofWoods’ car – a Buick Rainier – Frank quips, “Best contact you’ve made all year,Duval” (SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL, 6/14 issue).


GALAXY, THUNDER SQUARING OFF IN WORLD BOWL XII SATURDAY

TheNFL Europe Frankfurt Galaxy and Berlin Thunder will play World Bowl XIISaturday at noon ET at Arena AufSchalke in Gelsenkirchen, Germany.  Fox will broadcast the game live.SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL reports that the league is considering “consolidatingits six-team, developmental off-shoot to just Germany.”  NFL Europe Jim Connelly: “The NFL hada deliberate strategy when this league started [in 1991] to spread its reach asfar as possible.  Now we are at thestage where it is better for us economically and strategically to concentrateonly in one market, to generate a greater critical mass, to take advantage ofGermany’s rivalries” (SPORTSBUSINESSJOURNAL, 6/7 issue).


BUZZER BEATERS

The HONOLULU ADVERTISER reports that a multiyeardeal that would keep the Pro Bowl in Honolulu through ’09 “moved one step closeryesterday” as the Hawaii Tourism Authority voted to continue negotiations withthe league (HONOLULUADVERTISER, 6/11).

U.K.-baseddesign group navyblue will design the documentation for London’s bid to hostthe 2012 Olympics and Paralympics.  Thecontract is thought to be in excess of $450,000 (navyblue).

The Stars signed a two-year extension withbroadcaster Daryl Reaugh through the ’07-08 season.  Reaugh has called Stars games for the pastnine seasons (Stars).

The ROCKYMOUNTAIN NEWS reports that Colorado ski resorts "posted a 3[%] decline inskier visits this season compared with the previous year, largely the result ofbalmy March weather that kept many Front Range skiers away from themountains."  Skier visits fell to11.2 million from 11.6 million in the '02-03 season (ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS,6/11).

TV Games will use a camera mounted on a truck thatmoves along with the race during its 8:00pm telecast of Saturday’s CaliforniaStakes at Hollywood Park.  The sametechnology was used in the movie "Seabiscuit" (L.A. TIMES, 6/11).

TheArgent Mortgage Long Course Championships begin tonight at Meadowbrook Aquatic& Fitness Center in Baltimore, where Michael Phelps will participatein his final tuneup for the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials in July.  Phelps is an Argent endorser (BaltimoreSUN, 6/11).

TheGreensboro Bats will host “Sit On It” night during their 7:00pm ET game againstthe August GreenJackets at Memorial Stadium. The club is hoping to break the Guinness record for most peoplesimultaneously sitting on whoopee cushions. The current record is 1,372 (Greensboro NEWS & RECORD, 6/11).

Oscar De La Hoyawill host his annual Fight Night at Sundance Square at 7:00pm CT.

The History Channel’s “The Player and the Coach”will air at 8:00pm ET, and the ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS reports that the documentaryabout Red Auerbach andBill Russell “provides an in-depth,intensely human look at the dynamic relationship between the two while offeringa profile of the Boston Celtics dynasty that began when Russell joined theteam” in ‘56 (ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS, 6/7).

The Mystics will honor Anteon Int’l President of theSystems Engineering Group Deborah Alderson,Lockheed Martin Senior VP Marillyn Hewson, MCI President of Enterprise Markets Cindy Andreotti, Gannett Senior VP and CFO Gracia Martore, MedStar Home Health President Linda Maurano,SunriseSenior Living COO Tiffany Tomasso withMystics Role Model Awards during the team’s 7:00pm ET game against the Shock atMCI Center.

The FT. WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM reports that despitehaving the second-largest purse of the to date, the starting grid for theNASCAR Craftsman Truck Series O’Reilly 400 at Texas Motor Speedway will not befull.  Only 34 trucks will race in the36-spot event (FT. WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM, 6/11).

The MLB Rangers expect about 120,000 fans for thisweekend’s three-game series, as the Cardinals make their first regular-seasonvisit (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 6/10).

Starleaf Sports Entertainment COO Max Chambers will be in Jacksonville this weekend tocomplete the purchase of the WHA Jacksonville Barracudas and Orlando Seals fromDavid Waronker (FLORIDATIMES-UNION, 6/11).

Despite the absence of Canadian F1 driver Jacque Villeneuve for the first time since ‘96, the CALGARYSUN reports that Canadian Grand Prix officials “expect to draw the same300,000-plus spectators for the three days of racing that have turned out inrecent years when Villeneueve was thought to be the star attraction” (CALGARYSUN, 6/11).

Saturday

ThePatriots will receive their Super Bowl XXXVIII rings, and the BOSTON HERALDreports that the team will “drastically cut back on the number of rings beinghanded out this time around.”  The teamdistributed 250 rings in ’02, more than any other team. The rings have beenappraised at nearly $15,000 each (BOSTONHERALD, 6/11).

Smarty Jones’ Owners Royand Pat Chapman and trainer John Servis will return to Churchill Downs to “receivethe engraved Kentucky Derby trophy during a ceremony on the track’s StephenFoster Stakes day” (Lexington HERALD-LEADER, 6/7).

Dallas Morning News columnist Rick Gosselin will be presented with the Dick McCannMemorial Award for “long and distinguished reporting of pro football” at abanquet in Canton, Ohio (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 6/9).

Lightning LW Dave Andreychukwill bring the Stanley Cup to Disney’s Magic Kingdom.

Anna Kournikovawill play two exhibition matches at the Hamilton Tennis Club, first against Gigi Fernandez in singles, then partnering up withFernandez to take on two top-ranked Canadian juniors in doubles.
