NBA ALL-STAR GAME TO BE TELEVISED LIVE TO 212 COUNTRIES

TNT will air the ’04 NBA All-Star Game Sunday from StaplesCenter, beginning at 8:30pm ET. Thegame and related events will be televised live to 212 countries in 42 languagesthrough 103 int’l telecasters. A totalof 325 int’l media members from 41 countries and territories will cover theevents, including a record 54 TV networks and Web sites on-site with 20establishing commentary positions courtside. Several of the int’l players participating in the game will serve asguest commentators for the TV networks broadcasting events live with on-sitecommentary. TNT will air NBA All-Star Saturday Night, beginning at8:00pm ET, which will feature the inaugural RadioShack Shooting Stars, the 989Sports Skills Challenge, the Foot Locker Three-Point Shootout and the SpriteRising Stars Slam Dunk competitions. RubenStuddard, The Beach Boys and Tamia are scheduled to perform at theevent.

NBA TV, which will run 30-second spots during All-Star Weekend,is offering a free preview through February 17 for Time Warner Cable and CoxCommunications customers (NBA).


MILLER BREWING TO UNVEIL NEW GENUINE DRAFT AD CAMPAIGN

The MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL reports that Miller Brewing“is unveiling a new Genuine Draft advertising campaign in hopes of stemming thebrand’s long-term decline.” The TVspots, which are to debut during the NBA All-Star Game, “represent an attemptto tie Genuine Draft with the Miller Lite campaign that started inNovember.” The strategy uses ads “thatfocus on strengthening the Miller trademark and its connection with Lite, thecompany’s largest brand, and Genuine Draft, its No. 3 brand” (MILWAUKEE JOURNALSENTINEL, 2/13).


MAVERICKS’ MARK CUBAN TO BE PROFILED ON CBS’ “60 MINUTES”

CBS’ “60 Minutes” will profile Mavericks Owner Mark Cubanon this week’s edition, Sunday at 7:00pm ET. Cuban will discuss his in-arena antics, his business history and hishigh-def TV venture, HDNet. Cuban alsooffers a tour of his Dallas home and business operations for correspondent SteveKroft (CBS).


DAYTONA 500 SECURITY TO BE TIGHT FOR PRESIDENT BUSH’S VISIT

With President Bush scheduled to attend Sunday’sDaytona 500, the Daytona Beach NEWS-JOURNAL reported that the event “isexpected to be the most strictly watched” since the September 11 terroristattacks. Security in the “frontstretchhospitality suites – where the president is expected to visit – will betightened. … Local government and business leaders and other suite guests willbe required to pass through metal detectors and undergo other safetyscreenings.” An FAA spokesperson said temporary flight restrictions “will beenforced over and around the Speedway” (DaytonaBeach NEWS-JOURNAL, 2/12).


BUZZER BEATERS

The S.F. CHRONICLE reports that the Pac-10 is “dropping the Silicon Valley Football Classic in San Joseand replacing it with the Diamond Walnut Bowl” in S.F. The conference will sign a two-year dealwith the bowl, which will pay $750,000 to each team (S.F.CHRONICLE, 2/13).

Checkers Drive-In Restaurants today announced a multiyearsponsorship deal with the Devil Rays under which the QSR becomes the officialburger of the team (Checkers).

The AP reports that the four men indicted in the BALCO probe“pleaded innocent to federal charges [today] and were allowed to go free” (AP,2/13).

NASCAR todayannounced that NASCAR.com and Speed Channel will bring live in-truck video toNASCAR.com for 12 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series events this season, beginningwith tonight’s Florida Dodge Dealers 250. The four in-truck cameras will rotate among teams throughout the season,with teams announced the Tuesday before each race (NASCAR).

The Playboy Mansion will host Lakers C Shaquille O’Nealand other celebrities in a celebration honoring the return of the NBA All-StarGame to L.A.

The NBA All-Star Celebrity Game presented by 989 Sports andMcDonald’s will be held at the L.A. Convention Center, beginning at 7:00pmET. Sean “P. Diddy” Combs andWNBA Sparks C Lisa Leslie will serve as the teams’ head coaches, while ParisHilton and Ashton Kutcher will serve as assistant coaches.

Saturday

The Fourth Annual Hoop Magic Celebrity All-Star Charity Gamewill be held at 1:00pm PT at the L.A. Forum. Celebrity coaches Snoop Dogg and BET Video Host Free willtip off against NBA West Coast Legends coaches Dominique Wilkins and JohnSingleton. Proceeds will benefitthe Magic Johnson Foundation.

The NBA Read to Achieve Celebration will be simulcast atnoon ET on ABC, TNT, BET, Nick GAS, NBA TV, AOL for Broadband, RealOneSuperPass, NBA.com’s Inside Ticket, MTV (Canada), Toronto 1 and A-Channel(Canada.) Will Smith, as well asLeBron James, Carmelo Anthony and other NBAers will make specialappearances. Hilary Duff, Ashanti,Usher and FeFe Dobson are scheduled to perform at the event.

“Seabiscuit” author Laura Hillenbrand andscreenwriter Gary Ross will be honored with the 16th annualUSC Scripter Award during a ceremony at the Edward L. Doheny Jr. MemorialLibrary.
