YANKEENETS BOD TODAY APPROVES NETS SALE; RATNER TO SIGN

The YankeeNets BOD today approved the purchase agreementbetween Bruce Ratner’s Brooklyn Basketball and Community YouthOrganization, the nonprofit group that controls the team.  The approval is conditioned on thesuccessful conclusion of the YankeeNets’ separation agreement (YankeeNets).

CBS SportsLine reports that Ratner, NY Gov. George Patakiand N.Y. Mayor Michael Bloomberg have scheduled a news conference forlater today (CBSSportsLine, 1/23).


FSN CHICAGO TO EXPERIMENT WITH FOUR-CAMERA VIEW SATURDAY

The CHICAGO SUN-TIMES reports that FSN Chicago willexperiment with a new production element during Saturday night’sBlackhawks-Blue Jackets game at Nationwide Arena at 7:00pm ET.  During the second period only, “viewers will see four separate camera anglesat the same time.  A larger image willtake up much of the picture, with three alternative views offered on the rightside.”  Viewers will be asked to visitthe station’s Web site and send anemail “if they would like to see this enhancement added to future telecasts” (CHICAGOSUN-TIMES, 1/23).


RELOCATED NATIONAL TRACK & FIELD HOF OPENS SATURDAY IN N.Y.

The National Track & Field HOF opens Saturday at theArmory Track & Field Center in N.Y., and USA TODAY noted that the new HOF“consists of 15,000 square feet over three floors of the Armory.”  ‘74 NYC marathon winner Norb Sanders,who has presided over the rebirth of the Armory, “thinks there will be abuilt-in audience for the Hall because the Armory hosts meets that sometimesconsist of 6,000 athletes in a day.” The HOF previously was located in Indianapolis (USATODAY, 1/22).


AHL NORFOLK ADMIRALS OFFICIALLY ON THE SALES BLOCK

The Norfolk VIRGINIAN-PILOT reports that AHL NorfolkAdmirals co-Owner Page Johnson has announced that he and his partner, MarkGarcea, are putting the team up for sale. Johnson: “We’ll beginimmediately to look for someone to buy the team.”  Johnson said that the Admirals “will complete their current AHLseason and are focused on attracting a local buyer who would keep the team” atNorfolk Scope.  Johnson said the majorfactor in the decision “was the city of Norfolk’s inability to promise whetherthe 32-year-old Scope arena would be renovated or to what extent” (NorfolkVIRGINIAN-PILOT, 1/23).


PETE ROSE TO APPEAR SATURDAY AT FOXWOODS FOR BOOK SIGNING

The NORWICH BULLETIN reported that Pete Rose willappear Saturday at Foxwoods Resort & Casino in Mashantucket, CT, for an “invitation-only book signing and appearance”to promote his second autobiography, “My Prison Without Bars.”  Foxwoods spokesperson Bruce MacDonaldsaid that 200-300 casino players “have been invited to the event and copies of[the] book have been purchased for them.” When asked about having Rose – given his history – appear at a casino,MacDonald said that he “didn’t think about that” (NORWICHBULLETIN, 1/22).


BUZZER BEATERS

The Western Golf Association today officially announced thatLilly Icos’ ED drug Cialis will be the title sponsor of the Western Openthrough ’06 (Western Golf Association).

Roush Racing today announced that Sharpie Markers and IrwinIndustrial Tools will be co-primary sponsors of the No. 97 Ford driven by KurtBusch in the ’04 NASCAR Nextel Cup series. While Sharpie was the primary sponsor of the majority of races lastyear, each will be primary sponsor for 18 races this year.  Both Sharpie and Irwin are brands of NewellRubbermaid (Roush Racing).

The IOC Exec Board today unanimously decided to depriveSouth Korean IOC member Un Yong Kim of all the rights, prerogatives andfunctions of an IOC member until the current investigation into Kim in SouthKorea has been finalized (IOC).

TENNIS WEEK reported that ATP Tour player Taylor Denthas inked a contract extension with adidas (TENNIS WEEK).

Vision Media & Communications today announced that MichaelJordan will grace the inaugural cover of “The Green,” a publication forminority golf enthusiasts, which hits newsstands in March (Vision).

The CBA Great Lakes Storm have scheduled a Saturday pressconference at 5:30pm ET to announce that Kings F Chris Webber has joinedthe team’s ownership group (Storm).

The U.S. Congress today approved a 15% increase in fundingfor the Carol M. White Physical Education for Progress program as part of the’04 omnibus spending bill, resulting in $69M that will be provided in grants tolocal public and private schools, as well as faith-based and community-basedorganizations (SGMA).

The HOUSTON CHRONICLE notes that Reliant Stadium “went intowhat a facility official described as ‘lockdown’ mode [yesterday], and it willstay at that heightened level of security through Super Bowl XXXVIII” (HOUSTONCHRONICLE, 1/23).

Iowa-based Featherlite announced that its Featherlite LuxuryCoach division has reached a three-year sponsorship agreement with The GolfChannel.  Under the deal, the divisionwill sponsor the Mutual of Omaha Drive, Chip & Putt Junior Challenge (Featherlite).

The CO Springs GAZETTE reports that the Colorado SpringsCity Council yesterday agreed to “hire hospitality industry consultant HVSInternational of New York to determine the economic impact that a move by the[USOC] to southwest downtown would have on the proposed convention center” (COSprings GAZETTE, 1/23).

Busta Rhymes will perform a free postgame concert atPhilips Arena following Knicks-Hawks, which begins at 7:30pm ET.

The 76ers will distribute mini bobbleheads of F AaronMcKie to the first 5,000 children in attendance for the team’s 7:00pm ETgame against the Magic.  Dodge is thepromotion’s sponsor.

The AHL Cleveland Barons will host “Indians On Ice” duringthe team’s 7:00pm ET game against the Houston Aeros.  As part of the event, 22 Indians will sign autographs before andduring the game.  A portion of theticket proceeds will benefit Cleveland Indians Charities.
