KASTEN TODAY RESIGNS AS PRESIDENT OF BRAVES, HAWKS, THRASHERS

TheATLANTA CONSTITUTION reports that Stan Kasten today “decided to resignas president of the Braves, Hawks and Thrashers.”  Kasten was the “first person in pro sports history to serve aspresident of three major-league franchises at the same time.”  Turner Broadcasting Vice Chair TerryMcGuirk, who also is Turner Sports Teams CEO, “is a likely choice to assumeKasten’s role in overseeing the Braves” (AJC.com,11/17).


CHAMPIONS TOUR TODAY RELEASES 30-TOURNAMENT ’04 SCHEDULE

ThePGA Tour’s Champions Tour today announced its ’04 schedule, which features 30tournaments, up from 29 this year, and official prize money expected to exceed$52.5M.  The season will open January19-25 with the MasterCard Championship in Hawaii and conclude October 18-24with the Charles Schwab Cup Championship in Sonoma, CA.  The tour will play in 18 U.S. states, Mexicoand Northern Ireland.  View the entire schedule(PGA Tour).


NBC, FSN ANNOUNCE PLANS TO AIR POKER EVENTS OPPOSITE THE NFL

NBCtoday announced that it will partner with World Poker Tour and Travel Channelin broadcasting “The Travel Channel World Poker Tour Battle Of Champions” onFebruary 1 from 4:00-6:00pm ET.  NBCwill air the special, which includes the champions from all 13 WPT tournaments,as an alternative to pre-game Super Bowl programming (NBC).

FSNtoday announced that it will telecast the “Showdown at the Sands” poker eventon Thanksgiving Day, November 27, as six back-to-back one-hour shows from12:30-6:30pm local time.  The net willair the tournament less than 24 hours after its completion with the assistanceof 21 cameras, 21 tape machines, 12 instant replay machines, three continuousrunning editing computers and a special event NFL broadcast truck (FSN).

MEDIAWEEKreports that Time Inc. “has shuffled its publishers,” with Entertainment WeeklyPublisher David Morris moving to Sports Illustrated to succeed “longtimepublisher Fabio Freyre,” who becomes Time Inc. VP/Corporate Sales &Marketing.  Both titles have hired newmanaging editors in the past year (MEDIAWEEK, 11/17).

CablevisionSystems today announced the appointment of Vice Chair Hank Ratner toMadison Square Garden Vice Chair. Ratner will continue in his Cablevision role (Cablevision).

TheAP reports that Seibu Lions SS Kazuo Matsui today “decided to pursue abig-league career in North America” (AP, 11/17).

TheOnline News Association and the USC Annenberg School of Communication hasawarded ESPN.com the Online Journalism Award for “General Excellence in OnlineJournalism” (ESPN).

USABasketball today announced the launch of its official online store (USA Basketball).
