WACHOVIA TO BE FINANCIAL SERVICES PARTNER OF NFL GIANTS

Wachoviatoday announced that it will be the exclusive and official financial servicespartner of the NFL Giants. The three-year deal coincides with the July28th opening of the company’s first financial centers in Manhattan andincludes TV, print and stadium signage. Giants VP/Marketing RustyHawley told The Daily that the team has never had a deal in thecategory that reached this level, but noted that the team has had previousdeals with First Union and First Fidelity, both now under the Wachovianame.

Wachovia Dir of Corporate Marketing Sponsorships & Alliances Dan Fleishman, on why the company chose the Giants as a partner to help market the N.Y. area: "They have been a premier franchise over a number of years and their fan base, as you know is in the tri-state area, very well aligns with ours." More Fleishman: "This really helps bolster our more traditional banking presence in New York while helping to really announce our brand conversion from First Union to Wachovia in the New Jersey and Connecticut market." When asked if the company would sign Giants players to endorsement deals to help leverage the deal, Fleishman said, "We are extremely pleased with the contents of the deal as it stands today" (THE DAILY).


MID-AMERICAN CONFERENCE INKS FIVE-YEAR DEAL WITH ESPN

TheMid-American Conference (MAC) today announced a five-year programming andproduction agreement with ESPN that guarantees the MAC a minimum of 100nationally televised regular and post-season appearances in football and men’sbasketball. On average, 12-15 MACfootball and basketball games will be televised each year, including thefootball and men’s basketball championships and ESPN’s “Bracket BusterSaturday.” Contests featuring two MACteams count as two appearances under the deal (MAC).

REEBOK TO DESIGN NEW NBA ALL-STAR GAME UNIFORMS FOR ‘04

Reebokand the NBA today formally announced the launch of the “D’funkd” NBA apparelline and the continuation of the Hardwood Classic Nights program at industrytrade show MAGIC in Las Vegas. Reebokwill also design new Eastern Conference and Western Conference uniforms for the’04 NBA All-Star Game, which will be played February 15, 2004, at StaplesCenter. NBA All-Stars wore ‘88 retroAll-Star uniforms for this past season’s game (Reebok).

REUTERSreports that the Spanish soccer league season “will start on time thisweekend after pay-TV company Sogecable agreed [to] a rights deal with thecountry’s medium-sized clubs.” ThirtySpanish clubs had said they would boycott the start of the season “unless theyreceived an improved offer for their television rights” (REUTERS,8/25).

ESPN’sDan Patrick tonight will return as anchor of the 6:00pm ET“SportsCenter,” a role he will fill weekdays. Scott Van Pelt replaces Patrick in the 11:00pm/1:00am rotation (ESPN).

PenskeRacing today announced that Sam Hornish Jr. has signed a multiyear dealto drive for the IRL team, beginning next year. Hornish replaces Gil de Ferran, who will retire atseason’s end. Hornish currently drivesfor Panther Racing (Mult.).

BlackEnterprise today announced that MSG President of Sports Team Operations SteveMills and Mavericks CEO Terdema Ussery have been chosen as the ’03Corporate Executives of the Year (Black Enterprise).
