BEIJING ORGANIZERS ANNOUNCE SEPTEMBER 1 MARKETINGLAUNCH

AROUND THE RINGS reports that the “most-anticipatedmarketing program in the history of the Olympic Games will be launchedSeptember 1 in Beijing.”  The originallaunch date was postponed in May due to the SARS outbreak.  Beijing organizers say “a grand ceremony” isplanned for the launch.  While detailshave not yet been released, IOC President Jacques Rogge is expected toattend (AROUNDTHE RINGS, 7/18).

The AP reports that Beijing “has agreed to an IOC request tospend more for security” for the ’08 Olympics. The extra spending will add as much as $450M to the total cost ofstaging the Olympics (AP,7/18).


GOLFER RICKY BARNES SELECTS GAYLORD AS MANAGEMENT REP

AZ-based Gaylord Sports Management today announced that ishas signed ’02 U.S. Amateur champion Ricky Barnes to a managementagreement.  Barnes, who will be reppedby Senior Exec Cricket Musch, will make his professional debut August4-10 at The International at Castle Pines Golf Club in Castle Rock, CO.  Gaylord recently announced a joint venturewith Int’l Sports Management and AJB Sports Management to represent theircollective client list on the pro golf tours on each of the company’srespective continents (THE DAILY).


SOCCER NATION EXPECTED TO ATTRACT OVER 10,000 TO ANAHEIM

Soccer Nation, a trade show and soccer festival, will beheld this weekend at the Anaheim Convention Center, and the ORANGE COUNTYREGISTER reports that “more than 10,000exhibitors, buyers, players and coaches are expected to attend [the event], …the first of its kind on the West Coast.” Visitors can “test new products, place orders, play in the Fun Zone andsee the U.S. Futsal indoor championships.” Anaheim-based promoter Bill Hodson, who conceived the event: “Iwant to make this a staple in the industry. … When I started talking tocompanies and manufacturers, they said it’s about time somebody is doingsomething out here to celebrate soccer” (ORANGECOUNTY REGISTER, 7/18).


BUZZER BEATERS

Burton Snowboards today announced that Bryan Johnstonhas assumed the role of VP/Marketing. Johnston was formerly adidas-Solomon VP/North American Brand Management(Burton).

Banknorth and the Bruins today formally announced athree-year deal that names Banknorth the official bank of the team.  The agreement includes joint advertising andpromotional activities both on and off the ice (Banknorth).

The Chargers today announced that XETV-Fox will televise the“Chargers Power Report Show” during the ’03 season every Monday night at10:30pm PT.  The first of eighteen showsis scheduled for September 1.  Replayswill air Monday nights at 11:30pm on XUPN-UPN, Tuesdays on Cox 4 and Wednesdaysat 6:00pm on FSN West (Chargers).

Host Communications today announced that TX-based AcademySports & Outdoors, through a partnership with Nike, will serve as the titlesponsor of the three-day, five-game Texas Football Classic, which will beplayed August 28-30 at the Alamodome in San Antonio.  Academy Sports & Outdoors replaces H-E-B Grocery Company asthe title sponsor of the high school football event (Host Communications).

The T’Wolves and Lynx today announced that the organizationhas hired Chris Rooks as a Corporate Sales Manager.  Rooks, who will report to VP/Corporate SalesConrad Smith, previously worked for the NBDL Huntsville Flight (T’Wolves).

Puma AG announced that it has granted a licensing agreementto Le Bonitas S.p.A Prato, Italy, for women’s, men’s and children’s swimwear inthe European market.  The first linewill be launched in spring/summer ’04 in select countries (Puma AG).

The National Women’s Football League today announced thatFL-based Pinnacle Financial has signed on as a sponsor of the league’schampionship game, to be played August 2 at Vanderbilt Univ. Stadium (NWFL).


WEEKEND EVENTS

Friday

The Lakers have scheduled a 6:00pm PT press conference toallow Kobe Bryant and his attorney, Pamela Mackey, to addressEagle County (CO) District Attorney Mark Hurlbert’s announcement onwhether to press charges against Bryant. The press conference will be held at Staples Center (THE DAILY).

The World TeamTennis K.C. Explorers, featuring AnnaKournikova, face the St. Louis Aces at 7:35pm CT at the Plaza Tennis Centerin K.C.  As part of the night’s events,Chiefs LB Scott Fujita, TE Tony Gonzalez and WR Eddie Kennisonwill face Kournikova in a special three-on-one exhibition match (K.C. STAR,7/16).

The Reebok RockyMountain Revue opens tonight with Suns-Jazz at 6:00pm MT, followed byBulls-Mavericks, at Salt Lake Community College.  Reebok recently signed a multi-year to title sponsor the summerleague.  During league play, the Jazz,Reebok and the NBA will host youth and community groups from around the region(Jazz).  View the complete schedule.

Saturday

76ers G Allen Iverson will host the Allen IversonCelebrity Softball Game at 7:30pm ET at Prince George’s Stadium in Bowie,MD.  T’Wolves F Kevin Garnett,Ravens LB Ray Lewis, WTA players Venus and Serena Williams,Redskins LB LaVar Arrington and DE Bruce Smith are scheduled toattend (WASHINGTON POST, 7/1).

The Reds will distribute bobbleheads of RF Austin Kearnsto the first 40,000 fans in attendance for the team’s 1:15pm CT game againstthe Astros.  Pepsi is sponsoring thepromotion.

The Reliant Center, part of Reliant Park in Houston, willhost its first professional boxing card at 7:00pm CT, featuring native Houstonfeatherweight Rocky Juarez and lightweight Juan Diaz.  Showtime will broadcast the card, beginningat 10:00pm ET (HOUSTON CHRONICLE, 7/15).

The city of Lexington, KY, will host a pair of advancedscreenings of “Seabiscuit” with proceeds benefiting various charities.  The screenings, scheduled for 6:00pm and9:30pm ET, cost $100 (THOROUGHBRED TIMES).

Sunday

The WNBA Lynx will host the Great Basketball Dribble, theteam’s annual breast cancer fundraiser, following the team’s 5:00pm CT gameagainst the Storm.  The event, scheduledto begin at 7:30pm, is a 2.5-mile walk or dribble through downtown Minneapolis.

The WNBA Sting will celebrate Christmas during the team’s6:00pm ET game against the Rockers.  Aspart of the event, the first 3,000 fans in attendance will receive candy canesand the team will host a Santa Claus look-alike contest.

Chip Sturniolo, Owner of The Derby restaurant, in Arcadia,CA, will auction more than 370 lots, including Seabiscuit memorabilia, at theI.M. Chait Gallery in Beverly Hills. The following are among items included in the auction: a kangarooleather saddle with lizard skin trim originally worn by Phar Lap andSeabiscuit; leather riding boots and whip used by George Woolf; ahorseshoe worn by Seabiscuit when he defeated War Admiral at Pimlico in ’38mounted on a sterling silver ashtray (AP,7/15).
