SAATCHI & SAATCHI LANDS CREATIVE FOR IOC GLOBAL ADACCOUNT

ADWEEKreports that Saatchi & Saatchi has “landed creative duties on the [IOC’s] global adaccount, beating three other agencies in the final round of a review.” The other finalists were incumbent TBWAWorldwide, N.Y.; Rainey Kelly Campbell Roalfe/Y&R, London; andSiltanen/Keehn, El Segundo. The IOCplans to “retain the ‘Celebrate Humanity’ tagline that TBWA introduced in2000.” While media duties “were not anissue, since the work will run on the TV networks that carry the games,” ifpurchased, the time “would be worth more than $100[M]” (ADWEEK.com,7/7).


RIO DE JANEIRO SELECTED AS BRAZIL’S HOST CANDIDATE FOR2012

TheAP reports that the Brazilian Olympic Committee today selected Rio de Janeiroas its candidate city to host the 2012 Olympics. City officials argued that Rio “would have a head start on the2012 Olympics because it will spend $300 million to stage the 2007 Pan AmericanGames.” No South American city has everhosted the Olympics (AP,7/7).


BUILD-A-BEAR WORKSHOP TO OFFER NBA, WNBA APPAREL

TheNBA and WNBA today announced a multi-year partnership with interactive,mall-based retailer Build-A-Bear Workshop to provide NBA and WNBA apparel forthe company’s custom-made stuffed animals. The apparel, which will cost an additional $5-12 per bear, includes teamidentified T-shirts and jerseys in select markets. As part of the deal, WNBA players will participate in a varietyof in-store events. Build-A-Bear andthe WNBA will also run promotions to showcase the stores and merchandise (THEDAILY).


KYLE PETTY TO SERVE AS SUE BEE HONEY SPOKESPERSON

TheSioux Honey Association and Petty Enterprises today announced a personalservices relationship with NASCAR Winston Cup Series driver Kyle Petty,under which Petty will serve as spokesperson for a variety of Sue Bee Honeypromotional programs. Both Kyle and hiswife, Pattie, will be featured on Sue Bee Honey cookbooks in ’04, a wellas on in-store graphics and POS materials (THE DAILY).

ESPN.comreports that NY State Supreme Court Justice Marcy Friedman gave Knicks GLatrell Sprewell “the green light to proceed with his $40[M] libel suitagainst the New York Post and Post staff writer Marc Berman.” Sprewell is suing the newspaper for publishingfour reports that claimed he fractured his right pinkie finger – an injury thatsidelined him for the first eight games of the NBA season – during analtercation on his boat (ESPN.com,7/7).

N.Y.Comptroller William Thompson today released an audit stating that theMets owe N.Y. close to $1.2M in lease payments for calendar year ’01. Coupled with nearly $3.4M the team hasfailed to pay from previous audits, the team’s debt to the city is more than$4.5M (THE DAILY).

N.Y.-basedPantheon Int’l today announced the signing of a marketing and managementagreement with LPGA Tour player Cristie Kerr (THE DAILY).

A LIGHTER BUZZ

TheAP reports that Roswell Daily Record sports editor Gregory Jones “has been firedfor fabricating part of a news story about a golf tournament in which hequoted” Bill Murray’s character from the movie “Caddyshack.” According to editor Mike Bush, Jonesused the famous Kentucky bluegrass-California sensemilia rant, to “make [thestory] more interesting.” Also, Jonesreferred to Murray’s character as Carl Spangler, and not the correct CarlSpackler (AP,7/7).
