LEONSIS, PAYNE DELIVER ADDRESSES AT SPORT SUMMIT 2003

Sport Summit 2003 continued today at the Marriott Marquis in N.Y. with a keynote address by Capitals Owner and AOL Vice Chair Ted Leonsis, titled "The Fight For the Entertainment Dollar."

Commenting on some of the current woes in the NHL, including the bankruptcy filings of the Senators and Sabres, Leonsis said, "The big issue is that these assets are flipable and are usually able to be turned quite quickly. But because of the anticipated labor strike in 2004 between the players union and the owners and the commissioner, no one is stepping up to buy or reinvest or move these franchises. They want to wait and see what happens after 2004."

After Leonsis, the program shifted to the Olympics and updates on operations at the IOC and USOC, as well as the Torino and Beijing organizing committees:

IOC Dir of Marketing Michael Payne introduced new executions under the "Celebrate Humanity" Olympic branding campaign set to launch in January of next year in preparation of the '04 Athens Games. One spot shows Austrian alpine skiier Hermann Maier's infamous crash in '98. The spot explains that Maier later went on to win two Gold Medals. The narrator says, "Falling is easy. Getting up, that is the hard part." All of the spots conclude with a white screen showing the Olympic rings, fading to the words, "Celebrate Humanity" in black lettering with the www.olympics.com address on the bottom.

IOC President Jacques Rogge addressed the conference in a taped statement and said, "A leading sports marketing program has enabled us to ensure financial stability, even in difficult economic times. As we now move forward, I look at how to strengthen this success, we'll reflect on how to reduce the cost of the Games, we'll reflect on the revision of the sports program, reflect on the future of television rights. All of these actions are aimed at ensuring the best conditions for the best participation of the athletes and the future success of the Games."

Meanwhile, USOC President Marty Mankamyer put a positive spin on the recent turmoil at the USOC: "There is a renewed dedication on the part of all of the USOC officers to lead the volunteers of this organization and work with the staff of the USOC in a effort to create and sustain athletic excellence."

TODAY’S ARTICLES OF INTEREST

SPORTS ILLUSTRATED’s Frank Deford wonders if the NFL has “any teams that are good enough to play in the Super Bowl?” Deford adds, “This is a real dilemma, because if the NFL can’t produce any modern teams like those great juggernauts of old, squads truly capable of playing in the Super Bowl, how can we watch Super Bowl commercials?” (CNNSI.com).

The L.A. TIMES’ Lance Pugmire writes that Univ. of Miami RB Willis McGahee’s knee injury in the Fiesta Bowl proves “invincibility doesn’t exist in football; and nothing, including the notion that first-round locks like McGahee will earn millions of dollars in the NFL, is guaranteed.” McGahee’s injury “has reverberated through the college football landscape” as NCAA Coordinator of Insurance Juanita Sheely has received several forms of communication from student-athletes, including one who was looking for “an alternative to a premature move to the NFL under its exceptional student-athlete disability insurance plan” (L.A. TIMES).

USA TODAY’s Michael Hiestand previews the Super Show in Las Vegas, where 75,000 manufacturers and retailers will gather “for a giant four-day bazaar, where they’ll decide which sports gear you’ll eventually see on the shelves.” While industry giants will be well represented, the show “always teems with minnows.” The Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association’s Mike May says that this is because “lots of people can’t be athletes or coaches, but maybe they can make it as entrepreneurs” (USA TODAY).

The DALLAS MORNING NEWS’ Terry Blount writes that after Stars coach Dave Tippett learned the team was still using videotape to record and review the action during a game, the Stars “have gone digital, using computers that allow them to display video of any game segment in only seconds.” The technology, designed by Sports Systems Designs in Ottawa, “allows game footage to be stored and recalled off a laptop computer, (meaning) the coaches can look at it with one click of a mouse” (DALLAS MORNING NEWS).
