HAMISTER AND BERMAN STILL HAVE EXCLUSIVE RIGHTS

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman today spoke with the media regarding the Sabres' Chapter 11 filing. Excerpts from the press conference are below:

Bettman, on the filing: "When people look at the terms bankruptcy proceedings or Chapter 11, the initial instinct is to get more worried, more concerned, speculate, even get a little hysterical. None of that's necessary. The club will continue to operate in the ordinary course under the league's supervision. … We now have the funds to ensure that the club can continue its operations unabated."

On the sale of the team: "We want to take this club to a new owner, but right here in Buffalo. Our commitment in that regard has not wavered, and we're doing everything we can because we know this is a great market for the NHL. And it will be again when new ownership is in place."

On the team's financial security: "We have enough money, into the many numbers of millions, to ensure that the budget we have in place will be met. It's in excess of $20[M] if necessary."

On the bid to buy the team led by Mark Hamister and Todd Berman: "As far as we're concerned in our dealings, we're treating them as if they have exclusive rights. Under some formulation, it's possible that a bankruptcy court will insist on a procedure where someone might try to come in and bid on the franchise. My own belief is, based on the amount of work that Mark and Todd have put into this effort, based on the amount of work it would take anybody to even try and catch up to what's going on, I don't think that there can realistically can be another bidder that would be able to effectuate a closing for this franchise" (THE DAILY).

TRIGGER CLAUSE DELAY, SAVING AGREEMENT ON COUNCIL AGENDA

The SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE reported that the San Diego City Council tonight will review two items related to the Chargers. The first issue involves the request of a citizens task froce for the Chargers to postpone triggering the clause that allows the team to renegotiate their lease for Qualcomm Stadium with the city because the task force is "still studying options to keep the team in San Diego." While the task force endorsed the delay, the city council has yet to discuss it.
